It isn't often that travelers can witness relics and ruins from so many different time periods in one country, but Peru vacation packages can take you there. From restored archeological ruins to reenactments of famous rituals, there are Peru guided tours that can show you South American culture and history across the centuries.

Machu Picchu -- One of the most popular destinations is also one of the most mysterious. Machu Picchu is called the "Lost City of the Inca" and for good reason. Archeologists estimate that it was built in the mid-15th century, but only a century later it was abandoned by the Inca. Almost all Peru vacation packages will include Machu Picchu in their itinerary, as it now stands restored and the most familiar icon of the Inca civilization. Finding Peru guided tours that take you here are well worth it -- just don't forget to visit the small museum on site. It's somewhat tucked away, so ask your tour guide if you can't find it.
Inca Trail -- The Inca road system was a series of stone-paved trails that wind all throughout Peru, and the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is definitely worth a look. It's ...
... more than a single trail, as there are three distinct ones that can get you to Machu Picchu. Hiking the Inca Trail not only allows you to witness original Inca construction, it also takes you through picturesque landscapes, including the cloud forest. Only 500 people total are allowed up the trail every day, of which only 200 of the spots are for travelers, so book Peru guided tours up the Inca Trail when you book Peru vacation packages to ensure a spot.
Nazca Lines -- Probably the most ancient and well-known destination for Peru vacation packages is the Nazca Lines. These geoglyphs are carved in the ground of the Nazca Desert in Southern Peru and they can be up to 660 feet across. It is thought that these were created sometime between 400 and 650 AD. While they may just look like random lines in the ground when you're up close, from above you can appreciate the artistry. The lines create figures such as animals, trees and flowers that can only be appreciated from a flight above the area. Why these geoglyphs were created is unknown, but Peru guided tours can show you the best views and give you some history on the subject while taking you through this landmark area.
Q'oyllur Riti -- This ritual happens outside of Cuzco in the first week of May, and it is a sight to behold. People from the Ocongate district perform a ritual that is intended to bring man closer to nature by worshiping Apus, the spirits of the mountains. Held at the foot of Mt. Ausangate, thousands of pilgrims participate in the intricate ceremony that incorporates both Christian and native elements.
Inti Raymi -- Experience what it must have been like several hundred years in the past during the Inca festival of the sun, Inti Raymi, on June 24 while on your Peru vacation packages. This festival brings thousands together to act out a ceremony giving thanks to the sun god and to predict what lies in the year ahead. The event takes place at Sacsayhuaman, about a mile outside of Cuzco. You can choose to go with Peru guided tours or witness the ancient ceremony on your own.
