Silk Sarees - Origin Of South India Tradition

Since time immemorial silk has been very rightly considered as the material for the elite. Silk is called Paat in parts of Eastern India, Pattu in Southern India and Resham in Hindi or Urdu. Archaeological excavations in Harappa have suggested that the process sericulture (employing wild silk threads from native silkworm species) existed in South Asia during the Indus Valley Civilization!
In this article we shall take a look at some of the famous varities of silk sarees online from India.
Banarsi silk sarees
Banarasi sarees that are skillfully crafted in Varanasi are historically considered to be one of the finest saris in India. These sarees are particularly known for their gold and silver brocade work which is also popularly called zari work. The silk used in a Benarsi saree is of very fine quality. These sarees are embellished with opulent embroidery. The embroidery on Benarsi sarees are Mughal inspired patterns with intricate floral motifs, like the kalga and bel and jhallars. The pallu is specifically done extremely well with lot of attention paid to details. Depending on the design a Benarsi sari can ...
... take anywhere from 15 days to six months to complete. A Benarasi sari is usually worn by Indian women on weddings and pujas.
Kanjeevaram silk sarees
A Kanchipuram saree (popularly called Kanjeevaram sari) is traditionally made by weavers from Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, India. These are woven naturally and are considered to be of top most quality among all kinds of sarees. The Kanchipuram sari is essentially differentiated by its wide contrasting borders. A single Kanchipuram sari is priced anywhere between 2,500 to 1,00,000 depending upon the intricacy of the work, the colours used, the patterns made or the material used.
Interestingly, according to Hindu mythology Kanchi silk weavers are considered to be the descendants of Sage Markanda, the master weaver of Gods who is said to woven tissue from lotus fibre. Suns, moons, chariots, peacocks, parrots, swans, lions, mangoes and leaves are repeatedly used in these Kanchipuram sars.
Tussar silk sarees
Tussar silk also known as Tushar, Tassar, Tusser or Kosa Silk is specifically produced from Tussar silkworms. Tussar silk is considered very beautiful since the sarees have a unique texture than cultivated silk. Despite Tussar silk being less durable and having shorter fibres Tussar silk is still preffered. It has a dull gold shine to the material. So which silk saree are you buying next?
