The massive industrial revolution has increased the demand of the ‘centuries’ old bearings’. Bearings are device used to facilitate the smooth movements and to reduce friction. They have been found to exist in myriad types from as long as the ancient times where bearings were used by people in the construction of the pyramids in Egypt. Today, different types of bearings are manufactured to fulfil the needs of different machines; big and small. Cylindrical roller bearings, needle rollers and pins are a few of the many different bearings found in the present industrial world.
Functions of Bearings:
The first and foremost function of bearings is to reduce the friction between two surfaces or two revolving mechanical objects.
Bearings help in the smooth rotation of machines making machines run more efficiently and easily.
It reduces the risk of mechanical breakdown.
Bearings lead to lower consumption of energy.
All the above functions contribute to expanding the life span of the machine.
Uses of Bearings:
Bearings are used in cars, airplanes, refrigerators, air ...
... conditioners, computers, satellites, photocopy machines, washing machines, trains, vacuum cleaners, computers and the like.
What are Roller Bearings?
Roller bearings are designed in response to the needs of heavy machineries and extensive industrial applications. It caters to the needs of supporting heavy radial load. It is basically designed to spread the load over a larger area. It has the power to handle heavy loads and is appropriate for use in high speed machines. Roller bearings are made up of an inner ring, outer ring, a cage and rollers. The contact between the outer and inner race is not a point as in a ball bearing but, a straight line and this characteristic feature of roller bearings helps to spread the load over a broader surface. They are available in varied shapes and sizes and in different configurations. Conveyor belts utilize this type of rollers for bearings.
As mentioned already, roller bearings come in numerous shapes and sizes of which cylindrical and needles are two of the most common types.
Cylindrical Roller Bearings:
As the very name implies, this type of roller bearings is cylindrical in shape and is the most common forms of roller bearings. It constitutes a pair of rings with bearings in between. The cylindrical shape allows for the easy distribution of load across a wider surface area. They have the capacity to hold heavy radial load and are applicable for use in high speeds. There is a double row cylindrical roller which has high radial rigidity and is chiefly used in precision machine tools. Cylindrical rollers are either made up of pressed steel, machine brass or molded polyamide.
Needle Rollers:
When small cylindrical rollers are used, they come to be known as needle rollers. The prime function of these rollers is to reduce friction of a rotating surface. Unlike the ball bearings needle roller bearing has a large surface area in contact with the outer bearing surface. Needle bearing rollers constitutes an inner race, a needle cage, needle rollers and an outer raceway. They are widely used in pumps, compressions, transmissions etc. Drawn cup, caged roller, thrust roller and precision race are few of the many varieties of needle rollers available for the industrial sectors today.
Pins:
The pin type is designed for carrying high capacity load and is commonly used in aerospace, heavy industries, large load automotive etc. There are basically two rings at the end of the rollers. Pins are made from such materials as C45, C60 and stainless steel.
