What is domain name registration? And why is it important? A domain name is a website address. For example, such and such .net, .com, and so on are domain names.

You, as the website owner, can choose and change domain names any time you want. However, you must go through what is called a registrar in order to secure the rights to the domain you want. This is usually inexpensive if the domain you want has not already been purchased by someone else.

Domains that are already in use are generally unavailable. However, if you can locate the person who registered the domain, you may be able to negotiate a deal with him or her.

Sometimes when you attempt domain name registration, you find that a website URL has been parked. Basically, this means that someone bought the domain name but isn't using it for a real website, and they may be hoping to have the domain purchased from them. This is a bit more straight-forward and generally very affordable (as opposed to trying to buy a domain that is truly in use with a full-on website that is up and running under the URL you want).

The beauty of it is that it only costs a few dollars a year, usually, to register your domain! It depends what company you choose to register it through!
