Armoured electric cable is used to supply power in office buildings and homes. More than two electrical conductors are assembled together to make a power cable. It is coated by a rubber sheath. It especially caters to the need of installing wires underground. They can even be used overhead or can be left exposed running along the building. These power cables are of two types; single conductor and multi-conductor cables.

These cables are known for their armor made of stainless steel wound over insulation and conductors.
It is mainly used for safety purposes because of its outstanding strength under extreme condition of voltage fluctuation. Its capability to provide proper earthing has always been questioned.

An armoured electric cable having a single conductor lacks a ground wire. It is sheathed just for the purpose of protection. Both ends of the armored cable shouldn’t be grounded because the current may flow back from the earth to the conductor inside the armored cable which could openly invite any catastrophe only one end of the cable should be grounded which would not let the current circulate. In ...
... a cable having three phases the total value of the added sum of 3 magnetic fields is nil. Armored cables having single core lack “cancelling” effect. To prevent any mishap, an armored cable having single conductor should be buried in the ground and fixed.

Countless wires forming a maze to power your house are covered by sheath for proper insulation. Sheath prevents any short circuit between neutral and live wires. When different wires are sheathed they form an electrical cable. If you are purchasing steel wire armored cable for strength and durability, than you need to remember the following points.

1. Color of cable for coding - Steel wire armoured cable come in colors namely white, red, green, black and blue. A black, red or blue colored cable indicates live wire. White color indicates neutral wire and green denotes earthing.

2. Material used for making the cable - The most common materials used for manufacturing of wires is copper and aluminum. Choosing the most suitable conductor needs economic analysis.

3. Operating conditions - Wires used in wet conditions have a ‘W’ label on them. For a gaseous and oily environment wire cable come with ‘N’ printed on them.
