Until very recently many households relied almost exclusively on halogen bulbs as a means of lighting. A few years ago LED bulbs entered the market, but it seems that the first few generations of these bulbs just couldn't cut it in a halogen world, and customers reported of numerous failures, with LED bulbs having to be replaced very quickly after initial purchase.
But new developments in LED bulbs have meant that they're now much better quality than the early release models, and reports suggest that homeowners now stand to make huge savings in their energy bills if they make the transition from halogen to LED.
Cost
One of the biggest disparities between LED and halogen bulbs is, unfortunately, the cost, with LED bulbs fetching upwards of £20 per bulb. As the technology continues to become more widely accepted however, these bulb prices will fall over time - but perhaps the biggest concern is the cost of electricity, which seems only set to rise in the future.
Light colour

... - not quite blue, not quite white and definitely nothing like the warming yellowish tones of the traditional halogen, many homeowners quickly gave up on the idea of being able to work under the calming glow of LED, and swiftly reverted to their trusted halogen lamps. But things have changed since then, and now LED bulbs are able to be fitted without any perceivable change in light colour.
Lifespan
While none of us could really make an guess at the estimated lifespan of a halogen bulb - what with usage varying wildly from person to person - there's one thing we can be certain of; halogen fragility. Knocked you lamp on the floor? You've had it, that halogen will need to be replaced.
LED bulbs, however, are much more durable, and can achieve a lifespan of up to 10,000 hours (as opposed to the 1,000 of halogen (if you were wondering)).
