It is not unprecedented for a business professional to rise to the top of managerial hierarchy. However, they need to collect the capabilities needed. The higher you reach, the more sophisticated the responsibilities become. A business management course would enable you to negotiate the challenges with efficiency.

If you are a career-oriented professional who wants to reach the pinnacle, you need to perform steadily and be willing to take on new responsibilities. You need to sustain your determination and dedication, while adding new abilities to your repertoire.

An executive needs to learn managerial skills to rise to the position of a manager. He/she can learn some by observing the manager closely, but this is not usually enough. The only way to achieve these skills is to enrol on a business management course that enables you to optimize your capabilities. Such a course will introduce him/her to the nuances of the job. He/she will be able to get into the shoes of the manager and develop the right approach.

Management is also segregated into several tiers. In an organisation, there are lower level managers, ...
... middle level managers and the top tier. The job of a lower level manager is more of a supervisor, who takes instructions from the higher managers and ensures that the team meets the targets. Their role is to maintain a link between the executives and middle level management. They have limited authority, but play an important role by getting the work done. A lower level manager will require more technical and communication skills along with basic management skills.

Middle level management comprises department heads and branch managers. Middle tier management executes the plans made by the top level management. They co-ordinate with the managers of other departments and they are also the link of communication between the lower level and top management. Middle level managers are also responsible for preparing short-term plans of their departments. They need less conceptual skills but must hold expertise in managerial tasks.

Top level management includes the President/CEO/Managing Director and the Board of Directors, who are representatives of the shareholders. Their role is to determine the objectives, policies and plans of the organisation. Called the brain of the organisation, top level managers do the work of thinking, planning and decision making. They prepare long-term plans of the organisation. They are the final authority in an organisation and are directly responsible to the shareholders and the Government. Their efficiency and decision making is crucial for the success or failure of an organisation.

It is impossible for an executive to reach to the top. If it has happened and if you have it, you can redo the same again. However, for that, you must know what is required of you and deliver on it. You will need to change your approach to work as you progress. The mind-set of a manager is quite different from that of an executive. The key is to enter the mind-set of a manager. You then need to have the skills to deliver on your responsibilities. You can’t acquire the skillset needed in the short-term, so you need to make a well thought-out plan; but how are you going to attain those abilities?

An MBA distance learning is the most efficient way of doing that. However, be mindful of the reputation of the institute you are enrolling in. Choose an institute with good credentials. A sub-standard programme won’t do much good for your career.

The author of this article recommends Dubai based Stafford that offers online programmes in collaboration with prominent universities in the UK Distance learning is something they excel at.
