School Phobia -the Problem And Solutions
It was shocking for Jane to hear from her 10 years Mary’s school that she is continuously been absent for one week or more. Mary used to leave for school and sit somewhere in the school campus but was not attending classes. To Jane she never complained also about why she is doing this or whether she was purposely doing this. As a concerned mother when she asked about the missing school to Mary she just stayed mum and tears rolled down her cheeks. For Jane it was a worrying situation and she could not understand what to do? Punishing Mary for the same or scold her or warn her or let it go?
There are many parents who go through such situation. For some it’s more cumbersome when their children are aggressive, hysteric and stubborn. As a parent you think getting them into finest private schools in Australia or America is itself the best job done. But frankly speaking it’s not. Getting admission in fine schools is one thing and letting your child get adjusted to it is another.
School refusal is one common problem you seem to see in children of age 5 to 12 years. The intensity of which varies with time and situations. ...
... Some refusals are short termed like:
• Refusal after weekend or vacations.
• Refusal going school with peers.
Some that is long term like:
• Refusal due to psychiatric disorders such as, anxiety, panic, emotional distress, depression.
• Refusal due to somatic disorders such as headaches, stomach aches, palpitation, nausea, diarrhea, chest pain joint pain.
There are supportive medicines for treating school phobia in children but they are no magic. The situation can’t be cured till there is equal intervention of parents and teachers. So if you think you are facing some similar situation try and apply the following:
• Try and understand the root cause for such behavior. Talk to a child councilor and pediatrician for proper guidance.
• You have to remember that this is more sort of behavioral problem so it has to be treated with well behavior from your side.
• Request teachers to support you for the same.
• Take a customized approach to help your child. This may look very hard for long term refusal kind but if you handle patiently you can win.
• Motivate them with positive reinforcement at max possible. But do not allow taking advantage of such motivation so try and keep balance.
