Feng Shui 2013

The Chinese believe that life on earth is influence by the planets and its movement relative to earth. They include the five planets of the solar system that are closer to us namely Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter, plus the Sun and Moon.

They believe that these planetary bodies exert an influence - sometimes positive and sometimes negative - on our dwellings and on us.

For example the planet Jupiter takes 12 earth years to revolve around the sun. Hence relative to the earth, it appears at one of 12 circular positions each year. Jupiter is a very large planet compared to earth and the ancients believe that it has a profound effect on us.

To help us further understand the effect of these cosmic forces they developed simple mathematical model such as Tai Sui position, the nine stars, five elements set etc. From this and other related models we are able to predict the effect of such planetary movement on our dwellings and on us at different times.

In this article I will dwell on the rules for ground breaking and major renovations in 2013, the year of the Water Snake. Incidentally ...
... in the Chinese Feng Shui calendar 2013 officially starts on the 4th Feb 2013.

Tai Sui or Grand Duke

In Chinese cosmology, the planet Jupiter is also known as the Grand Duke or Tai Sui. In the year of the snake it is located in the SE3 sector thereabouts relative to earth. Houses that sit in the SE3 direction (or faces NW3)are affected by Tai Sui. Home owners should avoid carrying out any ground breaking or major renovation works in 2013.

For houses that do not sit on Tai Sui, they should avoid any ground breaking or major renovation works in the SE3 sector. To be safe they should also avoid renovation works in the opposite sector NW3 (also known as Sui Po or Year Breaker).

What are the penalties for violating Tai Sui? They are usually people related problems such as disputes, litigation, back stabbing and "little" people or troublemakers. They are annoying but seldom life threatening.

Note: You should also not sit facing Tai Sui. Sitting with your back to Tai Sui is perfectly acceptable.

San Sha or Three Killings

The Snake forms a trinity with the Rooster and Ox. The Rooster acts like a root of the trinity. Directly opposite at the East is the Three Killings or San Sha. The Three Killings comprises of The Robbery Killing, Disaster Killing and Year Killing and they occupied the sectors NE3, E2 and SE1. In practice we include the sectors in-between e.g. E1 and E3 and the entire sector from NE3 to SE1 is considered the Three Killings.

Again home owners should not do any ground breaking or major renovation in these these sectors. The penalties for violation are as the names imply, robbery, injuries, natural disasters, accidents, illness or simply more obstacles.

Five Yellow

The Five Yellow is the fiercest of the nine stars of the Purple White Flying Stars. In 2013 it resides in the center of the house. To be safe just avoid renovation works at the center of the house.

The penalties for violating the Five Yellow is bodily injuries or financial losses.

What if I must Renovate?

The above restrictions apply to houses that is currently tenanted. For a new, vacant or untenanted house, they do not apply and you can carry out major renovation without any worries.

But what if you must renovate your current house? There are a couple of things that you should do. First select a suitable and highly auspicious date and time to start work. Second, start work at the not afflicted sector, then gradually progress into the afflicted sector and then out and finish in a not afflicted sector.

To recap the afflicted sectors are SE3 (Tai Sui - between 142.5 and 157.5 degrees), NW3 (Sui Po or Year Breaker - between 322.5 and 337.5 degrees), Center (Five Yellow) and between NE3 and SE1 (Three Killings - between 52.5 and 127.5). All other sectors can be considered not afflicted.

Hint

To identify the afflicted sectors, first locate the "center of the house". Next place a compass at this location and align the compass needle with the North-South axis. You should then be able to read of the various sectors from the compass face.
