Tips To Manage Hypervm Vps Servers

Having a VPS server sometimes may be a pain: running HyperVM on a hardware server, with some VPS, you will oftenly suffer some slowdowns, caused by CPU overload.

User complaints? In this article we'll explain how to manage your OpenVZ VPS servers, taking the most power of a budget dual core processor.

First of all, you must keep in mind that a VPS server is a physical server, splitted into several virtual boxes. In general terms, if you have a two core 2.0ghz main cpu and 10 virtual boxes, you will have 2x2ghz splitted in 10, that would be 0.4ghz per virtual server. Each VPS has a processor slice of the main hardware processor. Not always all virtual servers will use all of its cpu slice, but you should keep a limit their processing, so that one virtual server never run out of its limits.

Keep in mind that a single virtual server may demand lots of cpu, and if it's not correctly limited, it may cause general slowdowns.

Second tip is to limit only one core for each VPS. Remember that OpenVZ is a good software, but it's not totally perfect. So keeping one core per VPS box will protect your main server ...
... from not good surprieses. If your main processor have more than two cores, you can give 2 cores for each virtual box.

If you don't run a specific job, if you know what you are executing, you can give more cores to a single VPS. These advices will help you in general ways, where you don't know what your virtual servers are doing in their virtual servers.

A third and helpful advice is always try to run a redundant disk RAID setup. As you run more than one server, your disks will ask for lots of reads, and this will shorten their lifetime. You must try to run at least one mirror RAID setup. To gain some performance, a RAID-10 would do the job.

The last advice is to never put away the backups. Always have a slave hdd, or a slave backup server where you can put your safe copies into.
