With the state of the economy at the moment, investors and job seekers are stuck asking the same question which industries are worth their time? Well, in the case of Britain, the manufacturing industry has shown gains despite the global recession. In fact, according to the Office for National Statistics, the British manufacturing industry has grown nearly 1% in the past year. This is quite impressive, especially considering other companies have gone bankrupt due to lack of sales.

Yet, it is natural to wonder why the manufacturing industry has escaped the effects of the global recession. Certainly, with people buying less, one would think that there would not be as much of a demand for these types of services. And when there is a demand, many companies turn to Asia, as their manufacturers are significantly cheaper than others around the world. So, how is the UK able to still come out on top?

First and foremost, the deflation of the British pound has made business operations cheaper for UK manufacturers. As a result, they can spend more money on technology, which reduces the need for manpower.

For example, ...
... which is easier, hiring 100 workers to mass-produce a product or buying a machine? The former option could cost a company over 2 million pounds, (assuming each worker earns 20,000 pounds each year). However, a technological innovation could do the same thing yet only requires one investment. As a result a manufacturer could spend more time concentrating on its business strategy. This is where the professional workers come in.

Thats right - if you are a businessman or woman struggling to find a job, you might want to consider interviewing at a manufacturing plant. Virtually every sector of the industry needs different types of professionals. So whether you are a manager or a scientist, chances are your local manufacturing plant needs you.

However, if a person is new to the manufacturing world, how can they find the plants that are best suited for their skills? Well, first they need general knowledge of the plants that are out there. They are as follows:

1.

Transportation-Oriented Plants, (where cars, boats or aircraft get produced)
2.

Scientific Plants, (which create products relating to biotechnology, chemistry and other sciences)
3.

Clothing Plants
4.

Food and Beverage Plants
5.

Electronic Plants
6.

Metal Plants, (where stainless steel and other metal-related technologies are produced)
7.

Pharmaceutical Plants
8.

Polymer Plants, (which focuses on plastic)
9.

Processing Plants, (which focuses on producing merchandise such as toys or furniture)

Now, with this knowledge in hand, potential employees need to work out which sector best fits their skills. For example, if you have incredible marketing skills yet hate research, scientifically-oriented plants will not work very well. Instead, consider working with a processing plant that produces everyday consumer merchandise. They would be easier to promote, as there is a larger audience to cater to.

In conclusion, the manufacturing industry is giving hope to the failing British economy. True, its growth still is not enough to consider the industry a cure-all, but it does give a little bit of direction to the frustrated public. Job-seekers know where they can find employment, and investors know which companies will offer the most profitable stock return.
