Board Up Mesa, Arizona
The national average for foreclosures is on the rise and Mesa, Arizona is no exception to that gruesome statistic. Although Mesa offers classes on foreclosure prevention it offers as many classes for foreclosure survival. It seems that no city is safe from this grim fact of a failing economy. You would be hard pressed to drive through Mesa and not see a host of vacant homes. They have done their best to be proactive but as more and more people lose their jobs it is becoming nearly impossible for people to keep up with soaring costs associated with owning a home.
Many of these foreclosures are the result of the sub prime mortgage debacle. Many people bought homes that they could not afford and those who lost their jobs and can no longer afford their mortgages make up many of the statistic also. The city of Mesa has certain neighborhoods that look more like ghost towns than they do communities.
As more and more houses are foreclosed on the issue of blight and vandalism is also on the rise. Overgrown hedges, weeds and junk being left on the property is a scene that spurs a sense of frustration about what's becoming ...
... an increasingly bad situation across the country, especially in lower-income neighborhoods of Mesa. Vacant houses in disrepair, increasing transient activity, neighbors complaining about suspicious activity and decreasing property values are becoming permanent signs of the economic crisis. Many fear that it is not the aftermath. Many fear that the worst is yet to come and they are doing what they can to keep their city as safe and clean as possible.
The issue in Mesa of boarded up houses and blight has become so widespread that the city has partnered with nonprofits to help aid the situation. The city will use the money for a mix of purchasing and rehabilitation of rental properties, demolish others and assist homeowners with down payments and home ownership counseling. Although the crisis is heading toward epidemic proportions the city is aware of the issue and has begun taking the necessary steps to take down the plywood and rehab the homes.
Ultimately the neighborhood will not be completely safe until the vacant houses are either occupied or torn down but efforts to do this are already underway. Many other cities have let this issue continue but Mesa has decided to do whatever it takes to stop boarding up homes and instead helping those who need help get it and buy a new home.
