Pinhole Glasses - An Affordable Solution To Vision Problems

I first became aware of the focusing effect of the pinhole as a teenager preparing to observe a solar eclipse using a pinhole in cardboard to focus the image of the sun onto a sheet of paper. During the next 50 years, I often used pinhole focusing but only in a makeshift fashion. At night, if I wanted to read the clock across the room without putting on my glasses, I would peek through a crack between my fingers to bring the clock into focus. When I experienced eye fatigue while driving on a bright sunny day, I have been known to attach cardboard with a pinhole to my glasses. Even though this was somewhat effective, it was never convenient and it is not something I would wear in public.

It never occurred to me that multiple pinholes would have the same effect as one pinhole, thereby overcoming the problem of reduced field of vision and brightness of image. I was delighted to discover pinhole glasses that are fashionable, affordable, and provide a better solution than my years of makeshift pinholes.

... from nearsightedness since I was in the 6th grade. My parents were hardworking but struggled to raise 6 children in the troubled early 1950's rural economy. Eyeglasses were a luxury that had not found its way into my family. Had pinhole eyeglasses been available at that time, I am sure it would have been an affordable alternative that would not have required the relatively expensive eye examination. Even today, although eye examinations are available to many low income families, the cost of eyeglasses can be prohibitive, or at best, a strain on the family budget.

I find pinhole eyeglasses very desirable for use in bright outdoor sunlight. On a sunny winter day with snow everywhere, Pinhole glasses reduce the effect of snow blindness. I am more relaxed while enjoying snows ports because I no longer worry about damaging or losing expensive prescription glasses. It is convenient and affordable to have an extra pair of pinhole glasses close at hand. After years of experimenting with my makeshift and ugly pinhole viewers, I wonder why I didn't think of it myself.
