In a globalised economy, business administration requires managers with high competency and specific skills. To become a good manager today, it is important to learn and train in abilities required for fulfilling that role, and contributing to the success of an organisation.

Being a good manager is part talent and part training. Management skills can both be inherent in you or be acquired through rigorous training. Why is it that some people always appear to be calm in a crisis situation or they always seem to be able to meet deadlines; or they are so well-equipped with the know-how to provide solutions to problems? Well, such people are not super-human. They are simply good managers.

If you too aspire to be a good manager and become an asset to any company you join, then invest thought and energies into understanding the management skills required for business administration. These skills will not only be pivotal in your career growth but also be personally enriching as you will develop a well-rounded personality.

So, what are the personality traits of a good manager? An analytical mind and calm demeanour ...
... in a manager inspire confidence amongst team members and senior management. From day-to-day business administration to crisis management, a good manager’s presence has a soothing effect. The manager’s analytical mind assesses problems quickly, gathers resources and provides constructive solutions. Their calm demeanour inspires confidence, provides encouragement and streamlines processes to achieve the desired results. A good manager displays exceptional decision-making and leadership skills.

Attaching value to timeliness is a good manager’s second nature. Adhering to deadlines is extremely important for saving a company’s valuable resources. Timeliness is also significant in completing projects and delivering products or services, thus contributing to an organisation’s reputation and brand image. Just imagine the damage caused to a company’s image if it is a pizza delivery service and promises to deliver the food in half an hour, but consistently fails to do that! This company will surely need excellent managers to ensure that the pizza is delivered on time, every time.

Another personality trait of a good manager is excellent communication skills. An expression and exchange of ideas drives business interests both inside and outside its premises. A business administrator will need to talk to all and sundry associated with the organisation. Effective communication will achieve results, while a lack of communication skills will impede both the company’s growth and the individual manager’s progress. A good manager will know how to communicate with senior management, customers, stakeholders, team members, media, corporate entities and government agencies.

Related to communication is a good manager’s skill of dealing with human resource. Relationships with people are crucial for achieving the goals of business administration. How team members, vendors, customers, media contacts and people in key positions respond to a manager is extremely important in shaping how they discharge duties. People are key assets in businesses and managers need to appreciate that fully.

A good manager will know how to manage money and resources. Businesses work on a profit/loss principle and money management is most crucial. Managing money is a great challenge at all levels. This has been exemplified by the global financial crises that we have all witnessed in recent history. A good manager will have skills to tackle all aspects of management, be it money, man or machine. The technology skill of a manager is very important in an increasingly hi-tech global business environment. A thorough understanding of IT tools and various technologies provide a competitive edge.

So, apart from inherent talent it is apparent that proper training is required in the subject of business administration to learn the right skills. Management studies are a good investment of your resources as you will find becoming a good manager extremely rewarding.
