When it comes to business insurance, PA bar and restaurant owners have special needs that must be addressed in order to protect their enterprises from a variety of different types of losses and claims. In addition to initial coverage, it’s critical that owners of these businesses meet regularly with their insurance provider to review their policies and determine if and when adjustments are necessary.

One element of business insurance in PA is coverage of equipment and property. Accidents happen all the time, and without sufficient property contents coverage, a bar or restaurant owner could end up spending thousands in replacement costs.

This coverage can include cooking and refrigeration equipment, computer and phone systems, chairs, booths, tables, wall décor and other items that could be damaged or destroyed.

Business insurance for PA bar and restaurant owners also usually includes a solid general liability plan. Workers are covered for any injuries they might incur while on the job by workers compensation, which is required for employers to provide. But what ...
... about guests? If they become injured through no fault of their own – and sometimes even through their own fault – a heavy lawsuit could result.

Any place that serves food has the potential to create an injury to a patron. Anything from a piece of chipped glass in a salad to tainted food can lead to a claim against the establishment. Consider also broken or malfunctioning objects on the premises – a rickety chair, a cracked booth leg, a loose ceiling fan and a lot more can cause harm to a patron and, depending on the extent of the injury, it could actually put the owner out of business were he or she not covered by general liability.

All owners of bars and taverns and any restaurants that serve alcohol who are looking at business insurance in PA should not overlook specific liquor insurance. This type of insurance is sometimes written into a general liability policy; in other cases it is a separate policy. But it is not normally a part of standard general liability, because it protects in a unique way.

Liquor insurance specifically targets incidents in which an intoxicated patron causes harm to himself or herself or to another patron of the establishment. Liquor insurance also addresses cases where an intoxicated patron leaves the property and does harm elsewhere.

Lawsuits abound in the above circumstances, and without sufficient liquor insurance, a business owner can be faced with a lawsuit that he or she could never pay out-of-pocket, which could lead to the end of the business.

In summary, all businesses need insurance. PA bars and alcohol-serving restaurants are in some ways different from “standard” businesses. The biggest difference is their need for liquor liability, which can save a business in the event of a catastrophic lawsuit.
