The boring Indian market got its first true taste of light sports bike with the launch of Yamaha R15. Specially developed for the Indian market, the R15 was launched in 2008 and made a huge fan following. The high performance Yamaha R15 turned many heads because of its full fairing styling and aggressive looks.

At the moment, Yamaha R15 is in its second stage with even more aggressive looks. Powered by single cylinder high revving 150cc engine, Yamaha R15 has been tuned to deliver performance more than anything else. Yamaha R15 draws genes from bigger bike, R6. With split headlamps, diamond type chassis, mono shock and sport-bike ride set-up, the bike looks very aggressive. The instrument cluster is inspired from the flagship sports bike R1 and shows the basic information of the bike. The big dial shows the tachometer while a smaller display notifies the rider about the information like speed, odo meter, trip meter and the fuel gauge. ... looks brilliant. The aluminium foot pegs and handle bar ends add to the rugged sports look of the bike.

Sitting between the two wheels is the brilliant small 149.8cc liquid cooled 4-stroke engine with first ever 4-valve technology generating 17PS of maximum power transferred to the rear wheels through less maintenance O-rings chain. The fuel supply system of the Yamaha R15 is fuel injected which means more power and efficient engine. The engine is mated with 6-speed gearbox with very short gear ratio, which you will certainly feel in heavy traffic. The bike is very well built for short burst of speed through that empty road or a track day but not that great for daily commuting from home to office.

Sit on the bike and the low slung sitting posture instantly induces the sport bike feeling in you. The low handle bar and the split seats lets you sit low and get behind the visor for high speed runs. The siting posture is not as comfortable as it could have been. With huge turning radius, the bike is not very traffic friendly.

Yamaha R15 has took Indian bike market to an era of light sports bike and same trend has been followed by many other bike manufacturers to tap the growing demand for such bikes in the country.
