A conservative commuter class market of India experienced a big turn-around during 2001 with the launch of brand Pulsar. Launched by one of the company; Bajaj Auto Limited known for its name in the scooter industry, the Pulsar slowly established itself into a mighty brand. Bajaj Pulsar's entry into India marked the change in the bike scenario of the country. Designed by famous motorcycle designer, Glynn Kerr, Bajaj Pulsar has become an iconic among the youth of the country.
Before the arrival of Bajaj Pulsar, the performance segment was literally non-existent. Manufacturers had to play safe with the launches main criteria of being fuel efficient. The Bajaj Pulsar was first launched in two variants; with 150cc air-cooled engine generating the maximum power of 13 bhp while the 180cc variant rumbled 15 bhp of power. The round headlamp dome with 15-liter fuel tank featuring aircraft type lid along with masculine features of the Bajaj Pulsar were echoed by the "Definitely Male" advertisements making it one of the most favourite bikes among the college goers and teenagers. Bajaj Pulsar received its first update during 2003, the second generation Bajaj Pulsar incubated the newly developed DTS-I technology featuring two spark plugs instead of one for better fuel efficiency and power. The new technology increased the power of both the bikes by 1 Bhp.
The year 2005 saw another upgrade of the Bajaj Pulsar, now the 17-inch alloy wheels were made standard across the range which was another first time for the Indian bikes. The fuel tank capacity was increased to 18-liters and the power output was tweaked to 13.5 Bhp for the 150cc and 16.5 Bhp for the 180 cc variant. The newly inducted nitrox rear shockers made the bike more comfortable. Bajaj Pulsar also got the LCD screen in the same year. The very next year, the Bajaj Pulsar was launched with new headlamp unit , new turn indicators, self-cancelling indicators, new LED rear brake lamps, non-contact speed sensor and less vibrations with improved gear shifts.
The fourth upgrade added some more features to the Bajaj Pulsar featuring all all-black theme body, tank scoops, 3-D logo and new electric system with DC supply. In 150cc, the power was increased to 14.09 HP. Bajaj Pulsar 180cc got wider tyres, split seats and better front suspensions. Bajaj Pulsar 200 was also launched in this year. Bajaj Pulsar 220F DTS-i replaced the DTSF-i version and produced a maximum power of 21 Bhp making it one of the fastest bikes from an Indian manufacturer. The naked version of 220 was launched as Bajaj Pulsar 220 Street Fighter.
In 2012, almost a decade after the first Bajaj Pulsar was launched, Bajaj Pulsar 200NS with all new design was launched. Featuring a host of new changes including oil-cooled engine, petal disc brakes, mono-shock and much more, Bajaj Pulsar 200NS became the bike with most awards in 2012.
