Being an architect is not just about designing buildings and creating tangible art. It’s about turning your clients dream into a reality. If you work in a large firm or with a group of arkitekter, the scope for you to innovate and be creative may be limited and restricting to a certain degree. But if you work in a smaller one or have a practice of your own then the chances for you to unleash the artist within you are higher. Though it may not initially be possible for every architect to start out on a business, you should work towards it if you are of an independent bent of mind.

Remember that you have the ability to create something that is beautiful and one that has the capacity to have a positive impact on people’s lives. When you immerse yourself into the project on hand the end result is bound to be an outstanding one. It can be very rewarding to see your designs in brick and mortar. An architect’s job can be very satisfying and rewarding and when you drive past any structure that you have designed, the pride that you will feel is another thing. As an architect you are expected to be innovative and progressive. You are expected to know about every new material that makes an appearance in the construction and building market and be aware of new technologies. Another very interesting aspect is that in the arkitektur profession there is no retirement age. If you have your own set-up, you can work for as long as you want. As a matter of fact, the gestation period in this field is much higher somewhat like what it is in the hotel industry and an architect gets better at his/her job much later in life.

It takes time for an architect to attain some consistency with imparting an individualistic imprint into structures that he/she has designed. And before this can happen, there has to be an understanding of ones own existence as an individual. There are a large number of avenues for architects and you can graduate from an architecture college and attain a degree without having to decide what you will be focusing on in terms of a specialization.

For some time, you can switch between big firms and smaller ones. You can take up a job as a project architect, be part of management or choose to be a designer. You can work in market sectors such as residential, retail, civic and hospitality amongst others and you will never cease to be an architect. Your degree will still have value in the market way beyond your immediate graduation time. There is no set way you have to be. You can be a nerdy architect or a creative one and still get away with it. All-in-all, it’s a profession like no other.
