A pressurized mechanical sprayer uses strong jets of water to remove dirt, mud, paint etc. from various materials known as wash down guns. These guns are readily used in industries like food and beverage, where cleanliness is a prime factor. Earlier these equipments were huge and meant for heavy duty works, various internal adjustments and settings had to be done for the desired flow. But today, with developments in this field, very small and handy equipments are available that do not require internal adjustments, and they cover a wide variety of applications like gardening, vehicle washing etc.
The working principle is very simple. First, water is supplied to the gun, where it is pressurized and then by pulling the trigger a very sharp and strong jet of water is made to strike over the targeted region. The tremendous force dislodges all the unwanted wastes and hence cleans the surface. Also, various kinds of nozzles are available for different purposes. These washdown guns are generally classified into high pressure guns, medium pressure guns and low pressure guns. High pressure ones are used in pipe work systems while the medium ones are used for foaming systems, whereas the low pressure ones are used in pumping systems.
But these equipments have also been the reason for many injuries to workers due to faulty designs or improper usage. As the position of the hands and wrists has to be maintained in a constant position for long time, it causes long lasting pain to the workers. So, it is very essential to adopt for user friendly equipment. Sometimes, the pressure of the liquid can be so high that it may cut through the skin if made contact. Care must be taken as this force may break or damage fragile parts.
