Manali trips are full of fun and thrilling experience. The location presents the most panoramic view of the mighty Himalayas. A trip to Manali is a must for anyone who is an admirer of nature, natural beauty and the mountains. Whenever we talk about Manali one name that is the most prominent is the Rohtang Pass. Located at an altitude of 4111m above sea level, Rohtang Pass is 51 km from Kullu, the twin city of Manali, and is one of the most picturesque valleys of Himachal Pradesh. This is a Mountain Pass which is in the eastern part of the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas. It is 49 Kms. away from the Manali city and connects the Manali city with Lahaul and Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh. Rohtang Pass offers a wide panoramic view of mountains rising above the clouds, which is simply awesome. Rohtang Pass means Piles of Corpses, and the word has been derived from Tibetan word in which 'RO' means Spirit and 'TANG' means Cold. Buddhists called this place Rohtang La and Kullu's local people called it Rohtang Jot.

... here include Sonapani Glacier, Sulphur Springs and Bhrigu Lake. Tourists can enjoy horse riding on the Shimla - Jalori Pass - Rohtang Pass trekking Route and skiing at the Sona Pani glacier. In summer, the temperature of the Pass is between 10 and 25 degrees. In winter, the temperature goes down till -7 degree with 8 to 10 feet of snow sheet. During monsoon time it is preferable to avoid this route, as the weather is totally unpredictable with landslides, storms, blizzards and untrustworthy terrains. The best time to visit Rohtang Pass is from June to October. During winters this Pass is closed because of the heavy Snowfall and Snow Storms.

The route to Rohtang Pass is the most ancient and first route to Leh Ladakh which is also an ancient trade route for Pir Panjal. From this Pass, two rivers are also originated, River Beas from the southern part of this Pass and River Chandra from the northern part of the Pass, which becomes the source river for Chenab River.

Although Rohtang pass it doesn't facilitate with good accommodation property but you can enjoy a comfortable stay in Solang or Manali. The hotels here provide clean and hygienic accommodation equipped with modern facilities at a fair price. These hotels also offer warm hospitality and adventurous excursions to places like Chandra Tal, Jalori Pass, Bhrigu Lake etc. Apart from comfortable accommodation and stay, the hotels also offer beautiful view of valleys, snow clad mountains and the picturesque greenery.

The horseshoe shaped tunnel, is the longest tunnel in India. This tunnel is 8.8 Kms long. Rohtang Tunnel is built on Leh Manali Highway. This tunnel is made for the all weather road route, so that round the year connectivity is there with Lahaul – Spiti Valley. This Rohtang Tunnel is the only route to Ladakh, as other routes like Zoji La Pass on Srinagar – Drass – Kargil – Leh highway are blocked for 4 months by the heavy snowfall. These two routes (one Manali – Leh Highway and other Zoji La Pass) are the important routes for military supplies.

By road, there is no direct route to Rohtang Pass, and to reach there one needs to go through Manali route. Many Volvo bus services are also available from Delhi, Leh, Shimla and Dharamshala. Whereas the nearest Broad Gauge Railway Station is in Jogindar Nagar near Mandi. The other nearest Broad Gauge Railway Stations are from Ambala Cantt., Chandigarh and Kirathpur Sahib in Punjab near the city of Nangal. If you want to reach the place through Air, than Bhuntar Airport in Kullu is the nearest airport.
