The Cowboy Artist Of America - Charlie Dye
Charlie Dye is a well known Artist who was born in the Canon City of Colorado. At the age of 21, he rode ranches all over Colorado, Arizona and California. Even since he was a young he used to sketch but it was only after accident where a horse fell on him that he considered a career in Art. One day while he was at the hospital still recovering he happened to see a magazine with some of the great work of Russell's paintings and this is what inspired him to portray lives of the cattle men. He started his career by painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the American Academy. He moved to New York in 1936 where he studied very hard day and night under the tutelage of Harvey Dunn in order to become a magazine illustrator. He teamed up with Felix Schmidt at a commercial studio and did some work alongside with him. During this exposure he painted several illustrations and covers for many major American publications of that time such as The Saturday Evening Post, Argosy, Outdoor Life and Collier's and started to make a name for himself.
A trip to California made him realize the sad quality of art that existed in the ...
... West and he soon started painting in the West where he established a studio in Denver, Colorado and became a partner in the Colorado Institute of Art. The first lot of his Western painting were very successful and in 1960 he gave up teaching and illustrating and moved to Sedona in Arizona. While he was on a trip in 1964, Joe Beeler, Dye and John Hampton started bouncing ideas and came up with the Cowboy Artists of America which would be an association where not only professional artist would paint just cow boys but they would also work as cow boys. This group continues even today following the same practice and is devoted to the paintings of Charles Russell and Frederic Remington, they also follow the sculpture tradition of their time. Dye was the second president of this renowned and prestigious organization.
Of his career, Dye says, “I cannot recall a time when I was not at home on horseback, or that I didn’t portray the life I led with pen and pencil. I have always tried to paint what I can remember of a life before I became dishonest and studied art.” His paintings are highly sought after today, and his works are held by many important private collections, and by museums such as the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City. Dye was a cowboy at heart and a very successful artist in the field he knew and loved best.
