When facing the task of writing an essay, our first concern is usually how good our punctuation and grammar are and if we shall be able to use them correctly. Even though both elements are very important for academic writing, there is another element we should take into account first: essay structure. Essay structure is linked to the organisation of the ideas we want to communicate. Generally speaking, any essay has the following sections:

Title
Introduction
Main body
Conclusion
References or bibliography

Title
At first sight, choosing a title seems to be a straightforward decision. However, an appropriate title depends on both the type of writing we have to do and the main idea we want to express. For an essay, the title should be illustrative of the main argument we will develop.

Introduction
The first section of an essay is the introduction. In it, we should identify the topic or subject of the essay, the reason for writing it (purpose), and the structure it will have. Since it should function as a roadmap for readers, we have ...
... to include the key words and/or concepts that will be developed in the next section.

Main body
This section is the core of the essay and, as such, we should write as many paragraphs as main points we want to discuss. Each paragraph must have only one focus –only one main point discussed- and it must be linked to the previous and subsequent one. To make this connection evident, it is useful to write linking words or phrases at the beginning of a paragraph though it can also be done in an implicit way.

Essays require support for each main point. Such support could be provided by means of data, logical arguments, examples, citations, quotations, etc. Any idea that does not belong to us must be properly acknowledged. Support also lets us show that we have read about the topic.

Conclusion
This section lets us assure readers can have a clear picture of the ideas discussed in the previous section. It does not include any new material, but an affirmation of what you have discussed. It is advisable to finish it with a sentence that connects it to the title so as to impact readers’ attention.

References or bibliography
To end an essay, it is necessary to acknowledge the authors whose ideas you have used to support your discussion. The referencing style should be the one selected by our college, university, etc. We must be sure of including all the sources mentioned in the other sections of the essay and referencing them accurately.
