Maintaining a routine check up on your dirt bike can go a long way in preventing unnecessary breakdowns or stalling while doing your outings. Otherwise you may just find your trip cut shot and you stranded in the middle of nowhere in an off road spot.

Having a maintenance schedule may not be general knowledge for some dirt bike riders but here are some tips for you to ponder on. If followed religiously they might just save you the embarrassment of being left behind by your dirt bike colleagues when racing.

The routine check-up
1. If you are preparing for a race it is recommended to check on your bike’s chain tension and oil it if necessary. You should also check your air filter to ensure it is clean. If it needs replacement it should be right away.
2. Parts like the chain and sprockets are really vulnerable to wear especially when racing and should always get tested.
3. Always clean your dirt bike to remove the dirt and grunge after a long trip. In the process inspect your controls and brake pads to ensure normal operations and cables in case they are frayed.
4. Check your ...
... engine and coolant oil levels especially riders of a four stroke type of engine.
5. Check your radiators for damage or leaks.
6. With an exception of riders who take part in motocross where tires are changed after every race, you should always replace tires if you notice missing knobs or when they lose their sharp edges. Replace both tires to keep them matching as a recommended practice.
7. If you ride in the sand or mud it is critical to check your rear and front tire air pressure. The rear should read in the range of 10psi and front 11-12 psi. This increases the surface area of the tire and creates better grip on the sand. For rough terrain you should inflate a maximum air pressure to 13 – 14 psi. Too low pressure in this type of terrain runs the risk of punctures or damaging your rims.
8. Inner tubes are manufactured with different potencies and thickness. Always use thicker or more depth inner tubes, they may just save you from those dreadful punctures.

Following these tips means you will have achieved a firsthand and secure control of your bike. This religious routine will on the other hand reciprocate with high performance and longevity.
