When the daily grind becomes too much, it’s only natural to seek an escape. And if you want to have a holiday, why not have it king-size? Luxury holidays to France can get confusing for the simple reason that there are so many palaces and castles you could visit. To make it easier to decide, here are the more noteworthy castles and palaces that should be a part of any France holidays itinerary.

Chateau de Versailles

This happens to be the most visited palace during France holidays – for a very good reason. It was, after all, the residence of the French Royal Family. Be sure to explore the formal gardens which seem to go on for eternity. Take a peek into the Hall of Mirrors, where the Treaty of Versailles was signed after the First World War. The Grand Apartment of King Louis XVI and the personal chambers of Marie Antoinette are a must see. After all, it isn’t everyday that you’re allowed to see the grandeur that royalty is accustomed to.

Chateau de Chambord

What’s a castle without a moat? You’ll find an impressive moat and even more impressive castle when you visit the Chateau Chambord. ...
... Built in the 16th century, this castle was actually used for luxury holidays and was a hunting retreat for King Francois I. Keep your energy up for exploring the 440 rooms this castle holds. And while you’re exploring the Renaissance architecture, take a minute to enjoy the scenery out the window.

Chateau de Chaumont

This is a castle that has been torn down and built back up. It has changed hands quite a few times. The highlight of this castle is possibly that this is where the Queen Catherine de Medici entertained august personages like Nostradamus. The castle that looks as if taken right out of a fairy tale deserves to be thoroughly explored, as do the surrounding gardens. Glance out of one of the windows and you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Loire River.

Chauteau de Chantilly

If you’re in Paris, don’t visit this nearby palace. Along with usual fare of artfully decorated rooms and wondrous gardens, you’ll also find an art gallery. Enjoy strolling grounds and admiring the moat. And while you’re at it, check out the Chantilly Racecourse – any place pictured in a Bond movie scene is worth exploring.

Chateau de Pierrefords

If you want to see a castle with a drawbridge, then this is where you can go. Constructed some time during the 12th century, this castle razed to ground. It was then restored by the notorious Napoleon Bonaparte a couple of centuries later. You’ll find the rooms have been left unfurnished, though the castle itself is quite marvellous. There’s even an underground crypt which is the resting place for some French kings.

France, despite not being a monarchy, still retains the charms of royalty. While you’re exploring the more sought after sights during France holidays, be sure to visit these grand places which royals used for luxury holidays – to help you better understand the history and culture which is an intrinsic part of the nation.
