There are many instances wherein anyone could acquire lung health problems such as pleural effusion. This is especially true to those who have weak lungs. Pleural effusion pertains to the excess fluid that may develop around your lungs. When left unnoticed and untreated, it could develop into malignant pleural effusion that usually occurs with some health cancers such as lung cancer, lymphomas and breast cancer.

Malignant pleural effusion could be the first sign of lung cancer. It could pose major medical problems and has a big impact on one’s overall health. It could impair you breathing when the expansion of your lungs is limited during ventilation.

In addition, this kind of respiratory problem is caused by an abnormal amount of fluid that is found in the space between the layers of tissue that basically line the lungs. When cancer cells are found in the fluid, malignant pleural effusion might possibly occur. Medical conditions that cause pleural effusion include symptoms of pleural pneumonia, congestive heart failure, renal disease, liver disease, pulmonary embolism, cancer, and Nephrotic syndrome.

Symptoms ...
... of pleural effusion include coughing, fever, chest pain (sharp pain worse with deep breaths and cough), rapid breathing, hiccups and breath shortness. Shortness of breath is the most common symptom of this kind of lung problem, and the more it grows, the more it is difficult for you to breathe. Chest pain usually occurs because of the irritated lungs and it would become even more painful during deep breathing. The pain may increase as the pleural effusion becomes larger.

People who have this kind of respiratory problem need to be more mindful of their health. They must undergo certain examinations, so that proper treatment of the disease could be made. It is vital to make accurate diagnosis of malignant pleural effusion since the treatment for this is very different from the treatment of benign pleural effusion. Diagnosis of pleural effusion may include chest x-ray, chest CT scan, liver and kidney blood tests, chest and heart ultrasound and pleural fluid analysis.

Malignant pleural effusion treatment is designed to relieve the symptoms of the lung problem. It aims to improve the quality of one’s health. It could reduce the symptom, but it cannot thoroughly cure cancer. For this kind of respiratory problem, pleural effusion treatment may include surgery. Thoracentesis pleurodesis and pleurectomy can also treat malignant pleural effusion.
Thoracentesis pertains to a medical treatment that removes the abnormal fluid in the lungs, while pleurodesis is a procedure that follows the first treatment to prevent the fluid from returning to the lungs. For malignant pleural effusion, a surgery such as pleurectomy is done to drain the fluid into the body’s abdomen. For those with lung cancers, chemotheraphy may be of help for treating malignant pleural effusions.

Generally, pleural effusion is a type of lung problem that could develop into a malignant one. It is caused by several medical conditions and may pose several symptoms that need to be diagnosed and treated properly.
