The Variety Of Wines In The World
Wine is such a great topic to explore and talk about, especially with wine lovers and enthusiasts. Even connoisseurs and sommeliers see it as an artistry and mastery of craft for distinguished palates. The best thing about wine is that it comes from various places in the world. Each continent and region would boast of its own vineyards and wine production. From the old and beautiful French and Spanish vineyards to New World wines in Australia, any wine drinker can enjoy a variety of wine flavors, aromas, and characteristics.
If we would base it on type and color alone, we have three major categories - the red, white, and sparkling wine. These three have certain characteristics that make it a preferred wine for different drinkers. It is most especially important when used in food pairing. Red wines are full-bodied wines. Typical varietals are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. These are good to pair with meat dishes and red sauces. For new wine drinkers, red wine might be a bit too strong on the palate, but the Merlot has a refreshing and welcoming flavor for first-time wine drinkers. The Shiraz or Syrah, on the ...
... other hand, is darker with heavy undertones fit for experienced drinkers.
White wine has a crisp and refreshing flavor with some varietals having fruity citrus flavors. The classic Sauvignon Blanc, for example, has a dominantly fruity flavor with hints of apples, pears, and tropical fruits like melon and mango. Some popular white wines are Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Reisling. Reisling is lighter and sweet compared to other white wines on the market.
The most popular type of sparkling wine is Champagne. It is so popular that the French made it a rule to call sparkling wines "Champagne" only if it came from the Champagne region of France. Sparkling wines as the name suggests are wines that sparkle because of the significant levels of carbon dioxide making it look bubbly. It is typically sweeter and lighter than red and white wines, but some are known to have higher alcohol levels. Because of its bubbly appearance, sparkling wines are a top choice in parties and festivities.
Wines can vary in flavor and taste, depending on the process of fermentation, the soil composition, and climate in the region. Even Australian Shiraz can vary from the South and North wine regions due to variety in climate and wine production process. Most experts would recommend a wine based on its region. For example, the Cabernet Sauvignons in France and South America are popular. The Merlot wines of California in the US are also preferred wines. It really depends on the palate and the winemaker, too. Others prefer a stronger variety over sweet varietals. Even some owe it to age and brand.
Whatever type, region, or brand there is, we sure have lot to explore and enjoy. That is why many wine drinkers are open to try different varieties and may not always stick to one brand alone. Getting to know wine can be exciting and full of promise. Whether you want to know more about it or just drink a glass or two, it is always fun to enjoy with good company.
