Tents, which were earlier used as portable homes by nomads, have now become ideal recreational camping and temporary shelter things. If we go by the dictionary meaning of tent, it is a shelter consisting of fabric sheets attached to the poles or a supporting rope. With new concepts and trends emerging in the industry, the definition of tents has changed.

A tent can accommodate single, multiple or even thousands of people. Small tents are ideal for recreational camping and are big enough for one or two persons to sleep in. Larger tents on the other hand offer a huge seating capacity.

These days, tents are used by nomads, recreational campers, military people and at the time of emergency for temporary habitation.

Luxury Tents

Luxury tents can accommodate a large gathering. These tents can be installed in garden and outdoor ground. Whether you have organized a theme party at home or a wedding with large gathering, these tents are available in different sizes and shapes to meet your requirement.

Traditional Tents

Designer tents with colorful border and curtains, these tents are ideal to be installed in home or hotels. Traditional tents have a limited seating space.

Resort Tents

Swiss cottage tent which look like hut is the most common type of resort tent. These come in several colors & are highly spacious, durable and water resistant. Mughal tents, lily pond tents are some other names in this category.

Outdoor Tents

Beach tents, relief tents, children tents and canopies are the varieties available in the outdoor tents category. While beach tents are smallest in size, relief tents can be big enough to accommodate hundreds of people.

Quality of Tents

Canvas is one of the popular materials used in making wall tents. It is a flame retardant, water resistant and mildew resistant fabric that provides long life to the tent. Canvas is 100 percent cotton, which gives it the ability to absorb condensation created inside the tent because of drying clothes or a similar activity. It is important that you dry the tent properly before storing it, failing to which will led to the growth of molds and mildews.

Cotton tents are treated with paraffin to improve their water resistance.

Nylon and polyester are other common materials for tents as they are light in weight and do not absorb much water. If suitable coating is applied on these tents, they become completely waterproof. The tents however have a less life because ultraviolent light leads to a slow chemical breakdown.

Since tents are installed outdoors, it is important for them to have high resistance to rain. Hydrostatic head in mm is used to measure the resistance. Tents with 1000mm or less hydrostatic head rating have best water resistance. The ones with 1500mm are ideal for summer camping.

Basic configuration of tents

There are three basic configurations of tents, which include Single skin, Single skin with flysheet, Double skin.
Single skin tents have one waterproof layer of fabric and have a roof and walls.

Single skin with flysheet tents has a waterproof flysheet suspended the roof of the tent. The flysheet overlaps the roof of the tent but does not extend to the sides or the end of the tent.

Double skin tents have an outer tent with waterproof layer that covers the entire tent. Inner tent has a sleeping area, which is not waterproof. Some tents might come with a thermal insulation.
