You already have your website set up and are currently using a shared web host in order to store, run, and maintain it. But, you’re wondering if you need to switch to VPS hosting and, looking around online, you haven’t yet found your answer. This is because most online resources state that you’re ready to switch to VPS “when you’ve outgrown shared web hosting.” But how do you know when you’ve outgrown it? There are actually a few ways to tell.
The first and biggest way to tell that shared web hosting is no longer your best option is if your web host has sent you a message telling you so. Of course, they won’t recommend that you switch, because they’re a shared web host. But they may send you messages telling you that you’ve reached your storage capacity, or that you’re nearing your limit on other resources, such as bandwidth. If this is the case, then that’s a clear sign that you have indeed, outgrown shared web hosting. But you don’t have to always rely on your web host to let you know either.
You can tell if you’ve outgrown your shared web hosting plan by simply monitoring your website. ...
... Check to see if it’s running slowly, including the home page and the pages within the actual site. If the pages take too long to load, or they won’t load properly, this is a big warning sign that you have outgrown your shared web hosting plan. If you can’t tell just by keeping track of your site for several days, you can always check your bandwidth, either by looking yourself or contacting your web host. If you’re reaching your bandwidth limit, then it’s also time to move from shared web hosting to something that will give you much more.
Maybe your website is running fine, and you’ve checked with your web host and have found out that you’re nowhere near your bandwidth limit. Still, there may be reason to make the move from shared, and that’s if you’re going to be adding onto your site considerably in the next little while. This is because the amount of storage space (the space needed to store all of your website’s data,) is limited – very limited – with shared hosting.
So if you know that you’re going to be uploading several pages of content, especially if many of those files are audio or video, and you know you’re nearing storage capacity, it’s also time to make the switch. If you’re unsure as to whether or not you’ve reached or are reaching storage capacity, check with your web host. They should have no problem letting you know.
It can be hard to know when the time is to make the switch to VPS or dedicated hosting, especially when all you hear that it’s when “you’ve outgrown shared hosting.” Follow these tips and you’ll know whether you’ve outgrown shared, or not.
