Theories On Origin Of Rummy

Rummy is one of the most popular and preferable card games of India. In fact, the game is not limited to India only; instead it is loved by people all over the world. The game is well-known for its unique "draw & discard" structure. The intricacy of the game lies in its unique patterns of melding cards.
Beside the immense popularity of rummy game, the origin of this distinctive card game is still controversial. There are many theories associated with its origin but nobody knows the real truth behind it.
Well there are many theories related to the origin of rummy but only a few of them, which really contributed to the popularity of the game, deserve a mention here
The Mexican-Spanish theory
The game is said to be originated a couple of centuries ago. Many people believe that the rummy game originated in Mexico or Asia where it is still played. While some people say that the game was originated in Romania. But this is not what everybody believes because many people connect its origin with the early Spanish communities who later moved to the west. They support this fact by giving the argument ...

However, there are many versions of rummy which outline the development and beginning of this game. Some of them trace its origin back to the late 19th century, at New York.
The poker theory
According to some other theories, rummy is said to be derived from the Poker game which was discovered by the French settlers of the west. As the game of rummy involves melding of cards. So, because there are similarities between both the games in terms of making combinations of sequences and groups. In fact, many people accepted that Rummy was derived from a game "Whiskey Poker" which later became "Rum Poker", then just "Rum" and finally came up with the name "Rummy".
The Chinese origin
Most of the people believe that the game holds its root in china because there is a Chinese card game namely "Khanhoo". Kanhoo is a card game which involves the distinctive attribute of making combinations (sets and runs) of cards just like the modern rummy.
The Japanese theory
Many people say that rummy was originally taken from the famous Japanese game "Mahjong" which bears a striking resemblance with modern rummy in terms of arrangement of cards in Set and sequences.
However, the true origin of rummy is still a unknown mystery but what matters the most is that it is source of full entertainment and preferred by people from all genre.
