A wedding is one of those rare occasions where you have the entire gamut of emotions and moods. The ceremonies can sometimes be solemn. These may be preceded by moments of infectious gaiety only to be followed by tears later on. Looks full of tender emotions are exchanged fleetingly and furtively between two guests during the ceremonies or at some other time during the day. You see a child devilishly enjoying a prank and looks of chagrin on another face. There is the light of hope in the bride’s eye and perhaps shades of sadness in the mother’s as her daughter moves on, the moment of parting a poignant one. A wedding is all that and more. There are little plays and byplays going on even as the main event proceeds.

One has to make an effort to position oneself at the right angle and this is something expert photographers can decide in a fraction of a second given that there are no retakes in weddings and that ceremonies cannot be halted while he makes adjustments. While light and shadow creates drama, colour is no less important. Weddings can be gorgeous compositions of rich hues and vibrant shades or, if the designer has so decided, a harmonious blend of delicate pastels. The task of a wedding photographer is not easy. Like God, he has to be omnipresent, ever watchful to grab an opportunity to catch an interesting byplay while never missing the pulse of the main event. He is there, unobtrusive, blending in with the surroundings and guests, never obtruding or getting in the way or becoming the centre of attention. Yet, when you see the results, you wonder how he managed to take that picture.
