Wiltshire, for example, is a mere sixty-odd miles outside London and boasts attractions including the ever-mysterious Stonehenge, which is operated and maintained by the National Trust; Longleat Safari Park, which was made famous in the BBC television series Animal Park; Salisbury Cathedral, which boasts the tallest church spire in the United Kingdom as well as an original copy of the Magna Carta and the world’s oldest working clock, and Wardour Castle, built in the 1300s and partially destroyed during the English Civil War but now owned and operated by English Heritage. The county is also fantastic for wildlife-spotting, hiking and cycling, so bring your dog(s) for a bit of exercise and bonding in the county’s characteristic valleys and chalk hills – just don’t accidentally run into a British Army training range while you’re out!

When it comes to booking your accommodation for your stay in Wiltshire, you won’t be short of options. Your choice entirely depends on the kind of experience you want to have. Do you want a rough-and-ready holiday filled with muddy walking boots, windbreakers and aching legs where ...
... you cater for yourself or do you want a slightly more relaxed holiday where you can shop in the county’s various market towns and villages and use the car to visit local points of interest? You can hire a cottage for the duration of your stay which will allow you to be as independent as if you were living in your own house, though this will mean that you don’t get a break from cooking the dinner unless you go out to restaurants every night, or you can search for the true country experience in a Wiltshire guest house which, at the very least, should offer bed, breakfast and WiFi so you don’t feel too cut off from the outside world!

For accommodation that does exactly what it says on the tin, search for bed and breakfast Chippenham or bed and breakfast options in other major county towns for a full range of options that really do give you the basics (plus an en suite bathroom, if you’re lucky enough not to have to share one washroom with eight or nine other people that you don’t know).

Of course, you can always go the whole hog and book a luxury hotel instead. There will always be luxury hotels everywhere as long as there are people willing to pay the money to stay in them, and there’s no doubt that they provide the fullest level of service out of all of the possible places that you could choose to stay in. However, to get the most authentic experience of a predominantly rural county, choose a guest house, inn or a B&B. They’re easily found online or through the county’s official website, which also lists all entertainment and special events coming up in the future so you can plan your holiday around what’s going on in Wiltshire.
