Now, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking: 'what's wrong with cats and dogs?' - and there's nothing wrong with them, nothing at all. It's just that they do have this habit of being a little boring and somewhat mundane as pets. Everyone buys cats or dogs, so why not be a little bit different?

Free eggs

What other animal can you think of provide you with a free source of food, without having to kill anything? And free range hens will ovulate regardless of whether you have a cockerel, who's only necessary should you wish to fertilise the eggs.

Less fuss

You might not think it to look at them, but keeping Free range hens as pets is actually pretty hassle free, and there's not much work you need to do. I mean, they of course require that you provide them with food and water and a spacious environment for them to wander about in, and it helps if you clean this environment every now and again, but really, this is all that's involved.

Less expensive

You can keep about 4-5 free range hens on a bag of feed that costs roughly £10 and lasts for around ...
... 4 months. When you compare this to the average cost of keeping a dog or a cat, which can run into thousands of pounds each year, you're making a huge saving. So for the animal lover out there, free range hens also make perfect financial sense.

The absurd novelty

The French author Gérard de Nerval used to own a pet lobster, whom he called Thibault, and would take for walks around the gardens in Paris. And as unfortunate as it might be, it seems highly probable that for a minority of people, the very fact of him owning a pet lobster was one of the reasons they first got into his work. And as the man himself says, 'why should a lobster [read hen] be any more ridiculous than a dog? ...or a cat, or a gazelle... or any other animal that one chooses to take for a walk?'
