Kedarnath which is named after King Kedar is a small Hindu holy village located in the state of Uttarakhand-India. Kedarnath is the remotest of the four Char Dham sites. Located in the beautiful snow-clad Himalayas Kedarnath is approximately 3500 m above sea level.
Kedarnath is near Chorabari Glacier, the head of Mandakini River and is set amongst exciting snow clad Himalayan peaks. Kedarnath houses the Kedarnath Temple which is an important religious spot for Hindu devotees from all over the world and is one of the four major spot in the Char Dham Yatra.
Weather at Kedarnath
Weather in Kedarnath is cold for most part of the year and it the moderately cool and pleasant from May to October.
The winter months i.e. November to April, are very cold with the average minimum temperature below freezing point, snowfall is very regular during these months, the summer months i.e. May to June are very pleasant with moderate climate, the monsoon months i.e. July and August are pleasant but normally accompanied with heavy rains; landslides during monsoon are common. Kedarnath Accommodation
Accommodation of all types (tourist rest houses, dharamshalas, ashrams and hotels) are available in Kedarnath to make your stay comfortable and economical. Comfortable accommodation is also available en route Kedarnath in places like Guptakashi and Rudraprayag.
Kedarnath Travel Guide
Kedarnath is open from May to October. Gaurikund is well connected by road. Buses and taxis are available from Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun daily during the pilgrimage season (approx May to October) to Gauri Kund where the road ends. Kedarnath is accessible on foot from Gaurikund- it involves a steep climb of approximately 13 kilometres. Mules, palanquins and helicopter services are also available from Gaurikund to Kedarnath. Porters (pithus as they are called in the local language) are available to carry the luggage from Gaurikund to Kedarnath.
In addition to the Kedarnath Temple some other places of tourist interest around Kedarnath include Gauri kund, named after Goddess Parvati which is surrounded with lush greenery and has the Vasuki Ganga flowing below it. Besides the Gauri Temple, Gaurikund has natural thermal springs and Chorabari Tal. The mouth Chorabari Glacier is approximately 3 kilometres ahead of Kedarnath. Vasuki Tal, a spectacular lake at approximately 4000 metres above sea level is a 7 kilometres trek from Kedarnath. Shankrayacharya Samadhi is yet another place of tourist Interest.
How to reach Kedarnath
Kedarnath is approachable by Air through Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport), by rail through Haridwar, Dehradun and Kathgodam and further by road to Gaurikund. Gaurikund is well connected by road to all important towns of Garhwal and Kumoan.
