The group of islands under Balearic Islands offers plenty of historical information and gastronomy delights to the locals and visitors. There are pre-historical findings on the various islands of the Balearic Islands which record the island’s history as well as Spain’s and Europe’s.

Historical findings

Menorca Island claimed about 500 historical findings which gave it the nickname “pre-historical open-air island museum”. There are impressive monumental ancient stone constructions such as the Talayots, Navetas and Taulas which were used for ancient ritual ceremonies.

There is also the Asentamiento de Trepucó that is located 2 kilometers away from the city of Mahón. One can also discover Talayot de Trebaluger arond Villacarlos and at Ciutadela, one can find Naveta des Tudoms.  Ciutadela is said to have the largest pre-historical monuments that are very well preserved.

The Talayot de Sa Canova at Mallorca Island can be seen with the remains of various ancient settlements like Ses Paises,  Claper dels Gegants and Capocorb Vell which were instrumental in transforming the society ...
... to what it is today.

The impactful cultures on these islands have been left by the Phoenicians, Carthagineans, Romans, Greeks, Byzanthinians and Moors.

Islands’ history

Mallorca Island was conquered in the year 1229 by the Aragon king, Jaime I who ruled the Spanish kingdom of that time. Menorca joined the Aragon kingdom in 1231 as it was frequently attacked by pirates. The Utrecht treaty at the 18th century caused the pirate attacks to cease although the well conserved fortifications present are proof of the episodes.

Menorca came under the British rule for a while until the French took over the island in the Amiens treaty in 1802.

Ibiza history showed its importance as a Carthaginean colony. But the Romans came and conquered the island until 707 when the Moors dominated the island. King Jaime I came conquering to free the island from the hands of the Moors.

Cuisine delight

Another delight of the Balearic Islands is the wide range of local cuisine that is typically Mediterranean. The local cuisine is extraordinarily varied with over 600 “Balearic” recipes.

Sausages are well loved on these islands especially Sobrasada Mallorquina which is a very spicy red color sausage. Lamb is another delightful choice cuisine ingredient on these islands as with eggs.

Mallorca offers a pleasant and diverse range of clear soups that come with noodles, meat or fish complete with vegetable sauces. Egg plants with meat or fish are commonly used in many local recipes with sauces and peppers. There is no lack of fresh seafood from these islands surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.
