Ever since the dawn of the hunting age, humans have been using ranged weapons, as they offer greater protection for the hunter and can be equally as deadly if not more so then melee weapons. Initially people used slings with sharpened stones and spears. Later on the Bow and Arrow system was developed. This provided more penetration and power and ease of use combined with greater stability. But still there was something missing. The need for even greater momentum, and stability led to the construction of crossbows.
The exact history of crossbows is difficult to discern. It is certain that crossbows played major roles in the East Asia, Europe and the Middle East in the ancient times and the middle ages. The earliest found crossbow bolts and indicate that in the 5th century BC or even earlier the crossbow weapon system was in wide use in the land what now China is. At that time bronze was the metal of choice with wood been used for the stock and other parts of the weapon.
A crossbow is essentially a bow mounted on a wooden or metal stock frame. The stock usually has some sort of system allowing it draw the string to ...
... tense it for firing the bolt. Now a day’s some sort of a lever mechanism is used. On top of this frame rests the bolt. The bolt is a modified arrow with a minimalist tail and head thickness to ensure the accuracy and ease of use.
One of the important attribute of any crossbow is the draw strength. This is usually measured in pounds (a measure of weight). It refers to the tension in the string which usually means that greater the draw power, greater the force behind the bolt would be. This would means that the bolt would hit with that much more force. Now a day’s certain standard draw strengths are used. The 50lb and 80lb crossbows are used are close range and less damage. The 120lb, 150 lb and the 180lb ones are used to real damage and hunting at a substantial range.
The crossbows are usually used with some accessories. One such accessory is the targeting sight. In ancient times an iron sight was used. Now a day the red laser sight and telescopic sights have replaced it. Another important accessory is the quiver. Much like with a bow, a crossbow is as useful as a stick without the bolts. The quiver is sort of like storage for bolts. This makes it easier to carry the extra ammo and increases the usefulness of the crossbow many folds. Another accessory is the silencer. The silencer is a set of multiple components used together to dampen the sounds of high vibration parts, strings and limbs. This helps make the crossbow a much more effective weapon for hunting as it is much less likely that the game would start running at the sound of the crossbow firing.
