If you are planning to replace your existing floor, cork flooring is an option you should take seriously. Cork is a very versatile medium that has been used in different ways for thousands of years. It is extracted from the bark of cork oak trees. Once a cork tree reaches 25 years of age it is ready to be harvested every 9 – 12 years and it has a life-span of 200 years thus making it a renewable source. This factor is especially relevant today when environment-friendly options are being sought in every avenue of life.

It is very natural to think of cork as a material that is used for capping wine bottles. Can it really withstand the stress of being used as a flooring option? Interestingly, it can! It is a very resilient product and can withstand high impact without damage unlike tile, hardwood or laminate flooring. It is able to withstand higher use and abuse than most other flooring materials. Its resilience makes it less prone to damage from furniture legs. Heavy furniture can safely be placed on cork flooring without it damaging the floor in any way. Brittle and breakable crockery can also be saved from shattering and cork flooring is useful if you have children around the house or tend to be a little energetic yourself.

Cork floors are water-resistant as cork contains a natural waxy substance called Suberin. What this simply means is that cork floors will not rot even when they are exposed to moisture or water over an extended period of time. This is not the case with laminate or hardwood floors. It is an excellent floor cladding for high-use and water-use areas like bathrooms and kitchens. They are practically maintenance-free. Stains, disintegration and discoloration are a thing of the past. Just wipe them and you are good to go.
