Centrifugal fans are also known as squirrel-cage fans and are used to move air and other gases around industrial environments. The resemblance towards a hamster or squirrel wheel is down to the blades that move in a circular motion in order for their effects to be achieved. The fans can be found in central heating systems and air pollution control systems. Gas or air enter the fans from the side of the wheel and accelerates due to the centrifugal force involved, flowing over the blades and exiting the machine. The fans consist of the fan wheel, housing and the driving mechanism as well as dampers.
Different drives
The speed of the fan wheel is determined by the fan driving mechanism, which can vary wildly from machine-to-machine. The speed can be controlled manually in some machines. There are three types of drive to be found in different centrifugal fans. A direct drive is usually powered by an electric motor, with the speed of the wheel mirroring exactly that of the motor itself. The only way to adjust the speed of this type of drive is via the adjusting the motor speed ...
... itself. Some centrifugal fans are based on a belt drive. These involve multiple belts which are used to transfer the energy from the motor to the fan. The speed of the fan wheel is dependent upon the size of the sheaves involved and the fan wheel itself. The speeds can only really change if the belts slip.
Adjusting speeds
If you’re looking for centrifugal fans that vary in speed, you should seek out variable drive fans. The speeds involved in these types of fans are not determined by the motor speed. Some fans allow you to vary the speed of the fans by adjusting the speed of the motor itself, and are also more energy-efficient, prevent energy from being used when it does not need to be. The fans are generally better at handling pressure than other alternatives such as axial flow fans. They can be noisy however, so it may make sense to install centrifugal in areas where the sounds that they make shouldn’t be a problem.
