Floor screeding is the act of smoothing and leveling the topmost layer of a poured material, such as cement or concrete. This is done in order to make sure that the height is uniform to the guides and forms that surround it. While screeding is ideal for garden floors and other outdoor home improvement projects, it can also be used as a kitchen concept. The simplest form of screeding is when you measure a cup of flour and use a knife to level out the top and compact the material to achieve a smooth layer.
Screeding is commonly applied in landscaping and gardening, especially in back patio building. What the contractor does is pour the concrete into preset guides and fill the form to a specific height. Screeding is immediately done after this particular step in order to ensure that the cemented area is fully leveled as it dries.
A well laid and formed screeding can extend the floor’s life and ensure its quality, while a badly laid screed can cost a lot in the long run because its low quality will have to be revived several times.
Choosing the right contractor ...
... to conduct screeding is crucial to the success of your project. Choose a contractor who holds extensive experience in screeding. You can ask for recommendations from family and friends who has had screeding done in the past. A good contractor has an excellent track record, and will have good references to back them up. Your chosen contractor should be able to manage all the aspects involved in screeding, which include planning, choosing the type of screed, design of mixes, laying of screed and providing protection to the screeding project.
If you are working on a budget and would like to do it yourself, you can use a screeding tool. This can be something simple as a wood plank longer than the slab width of the material you are going to smoothen out. You can also use a long piece of timber or aluminum instead of a wood plank. This is practical when used with another person, who will be positioned at the other end of the timber in order to simulate a back and forth motion with you. The tool will also be used to apply a downward pressure on the concrete so that the material will be compact.
