An encounter with the mighty Amazon River is the highlight of most tourists' Amazon rainforest tours. This river is considered by many to be the jewel of the Amazon jungle.

The Amazon River is the second longest river on earth after the Nile although some scientists have claimed that it's longer. It's not very easy to determine the precise lengths of these two rivers and so estimates vary. Nevertheless, the Amazon River is very long, anything between 3,900 and 4,200 miles long. What is not in dispute though is that it delivers more freshwater to the sea than any other river, accounting for one fifth of all the fresh water discharge. The Amazon, besides its length, can be incredibly wide at some points. Its widest point can measure 11 kilometers across in the dry season and swell to 32 kilometers in the rainy season.

Many Amazon rainforest tours are centered on this river considering that the river offers a great deal of experiences for tourists. To start with, the river is home to countless species of plants, reptiles, fish, mammals, amphibians and birds, some of which are ...
... only found in the Amazon. Amazonian animals are usually very intriguing to scientists and the general public. Here, it is often the case that scientists uncover some previously unknown species or rediscover a species thought to be extinct.

The Amazon River hosts very colorful creatures and which perpetually have tourists on Amazon rainforest tours in awe. The anaconda is the world's largest snake and the subject of a popular film by the same name. It is found in this river, often submerged with only its nostrils above the water. It appears as if the river provides so much room for animals to grow as large as they like. Take the case of a catfish that typically weighs 30 kilos or so. In the Amazon River, catfish weighing up to 100 kilos have been found. The world's largest freshwater fish lives side by side with the giant anaconda weighing in at around 200 kilos. This is just a peek at the rich flora and fauna that tourists encounter in the Amazon River.

Tourists on Amazon rainforest tours also have a list of other activities to keep them occupied apart from exploring the forest's rich biodiversity. One can take a cruise down the river on luxurious riverboats or go canoeing in the river. Those who are more adventurous can take a swim in the river's waters. The surrounding jungles are ideal for hiking as tourists look for birds and other animals that live on land. Anyone who's been to the Amazon River will tell that no other destination is quite as intriguing as this and so you should start planning to make your own trip down there.
