A blocked sinus may cause severe problems to the suffering patient if it becomes chronic. In such a situation, doctors resort to the procedure of balloon sinuplasty. This procedure is a non-surgical method to cure sinus permanently. It involves a balloon attached on a catheter, which is inflated after entering the nasal passage of the patient. By doing so, the balloon provides enlarged passage for the clearing of the blocked sinus and also facilitates the drainage of the nasal passage.

Balloon sinuplasty is also used by doctors to cure patients suffering from rhino-genic headaches. A blocked sinus may cause chronic and severe headaches as one of the various symptoms. The procedure is completed under the influence of a local anesthesia and can be done in a hospital or a separately created surgical atmosphere. The minor procedure also involves an endoscope, which allows the doctor to have a better view into the nasal passage and places him at a better situation to judge which part of the passage needs to be cleared ...
... with the help of the balloon.

This procedure is very similar to the angioplasty procedure, which is carried out on the heart, where a stunt is inserted to open the blocked vessels. The best part is that this is a non-surgical procedure, balloon sinuplasty doctors allow the patients to resume their normal course of life on the same day the procedure is performed. The patients have to keep their nasal area moist with the help of a nasal salt water spray that is given by the doctors. Another spray is also given to the patients to avoid inflammation of the area where the sinus surgery has been performed.

Balloon procedures are known to benefit patients suffering from frontal, maxillary and sphenoid sinuses. This procedure is not used for the sinus in the middle of the eyes, as it may interfere with the visual ability of the patients. Experts are also working to combine balloon methods with traditional endoscopic techniques and develop a hybrid procedure. Balloon procedures are known to be safe and have shown a significantly positive outcome till date.
