Even though Kerala is a well known tourism destination in Indian Ocean region unfortunately it is not marketed as a shopping destination. Grand Kerala Shopping Festival conducted by Dept of Tourism Govt. Of Kerala is new step towards to proclaim Kerala as a shopping destination.

The Shopping Festival is proposed to be conducted from 1st December 2007 to 15th January 2009. The 'Grand Kerala Shopping Festival' is visualize as an annual event and will become fully fledged with in a period of five years. This aims for a major impact in the trade & commerce sector, which has tremendous potential, and to make Kerala a prominent international trade centre. During the Festival, the retail shops, trade centres, shopping malls etc will be offering attractive packages to encourage the customers and attract more tourists to visit Kerala. The Festival will also interlink with the State's high quality mercantile, Tourism brand value & human resources strengths, which is inherent to Kerala. The Festival will give due consideration to market centres, traditional industrial centres, and tourism centres, who will accept the standards of sanitation, hospitality, amenities and other business standards. International tourists will have to be attracted to this trade fair. Facilities should be provided to the tourists to purchase products during the Shopping Festival even from the production centres.
