Plastering is one of those home improvement task which many people think they can tackle themselves easily. Most people think that some plastering company professionals would come for inspection; speak few technical terms and boast of their high standards; recommend expensive plasters, in-short make a big hole in your pocket. Plastering is just not about applying a new finish to the wall. It is about restoring the walls and ceilings which is a very sophisticated and skillful job. As far as small plastering job is concerned such as outside garage, where aesthetics are not of much importance and you are much tempted toward this job; you can do it. But if it is about internal or external plastering such as solid plastering, fibrous plastering or pebble dashing; it’s better to find an approved- expert contractor.
If you want to do the entire plastering job by yourself only it’s better to acquire a fair knowledge of plasters such as Cement based plaster, Gypsum based plaster, Browning plaster, Bonding plaster, Lime plaster, one coat or top coat plaster in advance. Their texture, waterproof quality, porous/non-porous material, how many coatings would be required and other properties must be on your finger tips. The trowel you are using must be in good conditions. It should be clean, rust free, smooth, highly polished and sharp. You can also buy pre worn-in trowels.
To cut angle bead don’t use hacksaw as its blade jams in the beading. Use tin-spins. Wear protective gloves when you are cutting more than a few pieces.
Don’t trust on One-Coat plasters for skimming jobs. Multi-finish plaster gives smooth finish also it can be further polished as per requirements. Don’t buy cheap products for the sake of cost cutting.
