SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is of the utmost importance for businesses with websites. “Be on the first page!” “Be the very first on Google!” First, first, first! Everyone has the same goal to be the first on the page. Many SEO companies sell website owners on the idea that you must be the very first website on the very first page at all costs. SEO Company That is an admirable goal, but let’s take a look at how this actually works in the real world, considering businesses offering local services, local goods, or national goods to see what happens.

1. Shopping for Local Services: When most people are shopping for local services, they do exactly that: shop. Sure they will definitely visit the first website on their search results, but that doesn’t mean it’s the service provider that they will pick. First, they will want to know what their options are and how those options compare to each other. Their other options are the websites that come second, third, fourth, or farther down the list. When looking for a service provider such as a plumber, electrician, ...
... mechanic, landscaper, etc, people are looking for very specific services and want them at the possible best value. If the services and the prices are more or less the same amongst all the options, people will choose a company that appeals to them with other considerations, such as their initial impressions of the company. Their first impressions come from a website’s appearance and how easy it is to use and understand, as well as, any provided customer reviews or recommendations. This is why local search optimization and onsite optimization is extremely important for local service providers.

2. Shopping for Local Goods: Searching for local goods is a little different from how people search for a local service provider. When people are shopping for a local product, such as food, clothes, gifts, cars, jewelry, etc., they are searching for a physical building or store in which to make a purchase. For these kinds of searches, people want to know what products are available, but even more importantly, they will need to know the address, hours of operation, payment options, and for special online incentives, such as printable coupons or special discount prices that require mentioning the website. Just like shopping for local services, if the available options seem too similar, people will make their choices based on other factors, like which one is closest to home, work, or favored shopping areas, if the website stands out in some way from the other websites, and if there are many positive reviews and customer referrals. It’s easy to see that people make choices that are influenced less by standard SEO and more by whether a site optimization is geared towards local searches and sales conversion.

3. Shopping for National Goods: Shopping online for mail order products is more complicated because there are so many more options available to customers. But there are still a few things that can have a significant impact on which website customers choose for purchases, such as a customer friendly refund and/or return policy, accurate sizing charts, easy to see product pictures, a variety of shipping options and charges, as well as, convenient payment options and having positive customer reviews.
Having your website optimized strictly for getting the first place on Google will certainly get you more traffic, but it won’t necessarily increase your sales figures. Having a home page filled with the appropriate search terms is great for making the search engines happy. Unfortunately, lengthy lists of services, goods, and locations with sporadically added key phrases makes a website confusing for the basic customer to read and understand. SEO Company When a potential customer is confused, they will simply move on to another website, rather than waste their time trying to make it make sense. In order to turn your increased website traffic into increased sales, you’ll want to find a balance between SEO for the search engines and content that is appealing to your visitors.
