It’s time to get a Root Canal Treatment (RCT) done when your tooth starts discoloring; when you feel extreme pain in tooth or when your tooth becomes too sensitive towards heat or cold. You may also feel tenderness towards chewing and even touching it. It is essential to get it treated as soon as possible because if it persists to decay it will cause the surrounding gum to swell and eventually can erode your jawbone and cause the creation of an abscess, leading to tooth loss.
What are the reasons behind this?
A root canal is basically the space within the tooth and the reason why it starts getting inflamed or infected is exposure to bacteria. It can be due to deep decay, crack or chip in the tooth; also repeated dental procedures on the tooth. An experienced and skilled Endodontist will make sure there are no missed canals, incompletely treated canals, remaining tissue, fracture or bacterial post-treatment leakage. So it is very much important if a practitioner is performing endodontic (root canal) treatment, he or she needs to have the proper equipment to treat the full anatomy present in a tooth and be skilled ...
... at it.
What is the treatment about?
The root canal treatment or therapy is also known as endodontic treatment. The word “Endodontic” comes from two Greek words "Endo" - meaning inside - and "odont" meaning tooth. So an Endodontic treatment is basically treating inside the tooth. The outer part of a human tooth is called a crown and the inside part is called Root. The Root consists of pulp chamber, root canal containing pulp tissue, bone, supporting ligament, root end opening etc. In the RCT procedure the pulp chamber is removed and is filled with an apt material. If the RCT is successful the tooth is free of bacteria and can last for long time preventing the extraction of tooth. After the treatment you may feel sensitivity and pain for few days. This can be relieved by prescribed medications.
Checklist:
1. Make sure your root canal is never been done without using rubber dam. (A rubber dam is basically the latex or non-latex barrier preventing small instruments from falling to the back of the mouth and also bacteria rich saliva from entering the tooth.)
2. Make sure the Endodontist places a cotton pellet and a temporary material after the treatment. In case a permanent filling cannot be placed at the time a root canal is completed, an orifice barrier is the next best alternative.

Are Root Canal treatments successful?
The success rate of a RCT or Endodontic treatment is between 85% and 97%.
