Indian Railway is one of the largest and complex networks in the world. The railway has divisions and zones for efficient management of the system. Over 14000 trains run across the country every day. As the network is well connected even to the remote location, there are over 7500 stations in the country and one cannot identify the station names easily. For the ease of the passengers, the railway provides the railway station codes to help them gather information.

The passengers can make enquiries by just entering the source station code and the destination station code. The station code is just a few letters of the station name. For example, to get information on the trains running between New Delhi and Mumbai, the customer need to enter the station codes NDLS (New Delhi) and BCT (Mumbai) in the fields marked for source and destination station.

There are printed forms available with the entire list of stations, station codes, name of the station, state and the zone under which the station is placed. Some of the prominent stations are the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai, Chennai Central, Howrah Railway Station, ...
... Kharagpur Junction, Kanpur Central, and so on.

With the digital facility, getting information on the station names and codes is simple and quick. Not everyone is familiar with the station codes so the IRCTC provides easy means to obtain the codes. The users can enter a few characters of the station name on the source and the destination station where you can view the displayed results along with the station codes. On the IRCTC website, users can click on the ‘view codes’ and click on station codes.

It displays the section with Station Code Enquiry. The users have to provide the station name and choose from the type of search. There are options of search methods as search start string, search part string, sort on station names and sort on station codes. You can mark the options and click on ‘Get Code’ where it instantly displays the required information.

The station codes mainly have a few letters from the name of the station. Some codes may relate to old names of the cities. Sometimes even the station codes change on changing the name of the station. For example BB (Bombay Victoria Terminus) is changed to a new code CSTM (Chahatrapati Shivaji Terminus Mumbai). There are cases where the station codes remain the same even on changing the station name. For example, the station code MAS remains the same even when Madras Central is changed to Chennai Central.

Passengers should be aware of the railway station codes to make a reservation or even make queries about the train route. So, make use of the easy tools to acquire the required information.
