Pinhole Glasses - Real Or A Myth
Our world today is full of complex chemicals and high tech gadgets, yet there is a trend to find more natural ways of curing what ails us. About 168 million people are estimated to wear prescription eyeglasses, more need them and choose not to wear them. Eyeglasses may not seem like a complicated or high tech device but they are. Lens are curved to fix a multiple array of vision problems, dual lens (bifocals) provide two fixes in one and now even sunglasses can improve vision! It takes many patients years before a noticeable change is made in their vision, others will always have glasses. What if there was a simple more natural way of correcting vision problems? Enter pinhole glasses, for centuries different cultures had reaped the benefits of this simple invention.
Eskimos used to carve a pair of slotted glasses from wood, this would reduce the amount of glare from snow during white out conditions. They didn't know it but they were at the front of a revolution in natural eye correction. Using the same principle pinhole glasses ...
... today offer the same results in a more stylish look. Each lens is black with only small holes letting light through to the eye for processing. To fully understand this you need to know that the eye in itself is a complex device. It takes all the light information in around you, processes it, flips its and sends it to your brain thus giving you the ability to see. Like with any organ the eye can become overworked, when it's overworked it processes images less effectively giving you less than perfect vision.
Using pinhole eyeglasses gives the eye a much needed break from processing all the light data being sent to it. One of the people who benefit most from pinholes are people with computer vision syndrome, or people who stare at a computer screen all day and have dry eyes, headaches, etc as a result of it. When someone looks at a computer screen all the light from the screen is sent to the eye, in most people the eye can handle this. In those people who have to spend hours looking at the screen the eye gets overwhelmed and they get those painful symptoms as a result. Using pinhole glasses the amount of light the eye processes is reduced, the user is still able to see the complete picture but doesn't have to process any extra light. This gives the eye a chance to fully process the data and give back a quality image all without overworking itself, thus giving the user less symptoms.
Even Ophthalmologists use the pinhole principle, when a patient comes in the doctor holds a piece of plastic over the eye with only a pinhole in the center. The idea the doctor is looking for is the eye will focus only what's being sent through the pinhole. When focused through a smaller point almost everything is stronger, think of a garden hose when you put your thumb over it, or when you take a magnifying glass in the sun. This means the doctor get the best picture of the eyes best performance, giving them the greatest idea of what needs to be done if anything, to correct vision.
Each pair of pinhole glasses are pretty much the same, meaning unlike traditional glasses you can share pinholes. Friends and family members of users will be able to try them out for themselves, they'll be able to see the same results as the user. This makes pinholes great gifts, almost everyone can benefit, including children. Children find them a fun unique way of looking at their vision, they can wear them while watching TV or even reading, seeming more like a toy than corrective lens. There are a few people that shouldn't use pinholes, people with server myopia. Also a few activities that shouldn't be done while wearing them any activity that requires peripheral vision (such as driving).
Giving your eyes a break is the most natural of cures, for some people that means less time in front of a computer, for others where this just isn't an option pinhole glasses are the answer. They are safe, becoming increasingly more stylish and who knows the hero you can become while strutting around in your pinhole glasses. Just be prepared for interested questions from curious people.
Mike has been writing and publishing articles about health products. He recently came across a website on pinhole glasses which gave information about this old technique of using pinhole glasses for eyesight correction.
