In order to drive a vehicle in the United States, each state has required that drivers have auto insurance.

Many insurance companies consider us to be mere statistics with the business they want to make money from. You may have to self-educate yourself on the types of auto insurance available, so you can choose which is right for you.

The executives of the insurance companies figure out what someone is going to cost them, and then they charge a rate which is based on being in one pool or another.

An auto insurance policy typically has several different parts, corresponding to different types of insurance. The types of insurance your state requires you to have are what you will need to sign up for and then you can add the extra ones you want to them.

It is a requirement of most states for us to have some type of bodily injury coverage. This coverage will take care of claims of bodily injury to another person you may have hurt in an accident; the other motorist, a pedestrian or maybe a passenger in your vehicle.

You'll probably either have to have or very much want to add some Liability ...
... or property damage insurance to that. This insurance covers damage to property if you're at fault in an accident. You will be required by most states to carry enough coverage to pay from $10,000 to $15,000 in damages, however, you might want to think about getting additional coverage.

In an accident caused by you, damages done to your own vehicle can be covered by collision insurance, but you may reconsider this coverage if your car is over five years old. The cost of repairs has to be compared to the cost of the premiums. Financing a new car requires you to get at least a minimum level of collision coverage.

Comprehensive insurance was introduced to cover dmages to your car in addition to those caused by an accident with another car. That sort of damage may be fire, vanalism, storm damage or that caused by a deer on the highway.

If you think your car is not in very good condition or if it is an older model, you may want to forget about this type of coverage. If you have recently taken out a loan to finance your vehicle, you will be required to get this type of insurance.

If you are involved in an accident with an uninsured or under-insured motorist, there is insurance coverage that takes care of you. It is a law in each state to have auto insurance before you drive, but some people think they can go without it, so the Uninsured Motorist insurance covers this.

Those are the major categories of auto insurance. There has to be confirmation of your need for all of these kinds of coverage, according to your auto's age, condition and likely repair cost plus the minimum requirements of your state.

Many times you will be able to reduce your premiums by a significant amount by increasing the deductibles in things like collision coverage and then keep enough reserve cash to cover the deductible.
