Interaction design is an increasingly important part of the development of websites and apps. This area is also prevalent in the mobile design field. With touch-screen devices becoming more popular, the design of interactions plays even more of a role in the user experience and the business requirements of a website or app. This article will look into how prototyping software can be used in interaction design and what the benefits of prototyping tools are. There are many tools that interaction designer use when planning use-cases and user flow. These range from standard diagram and illustration tools – to complex prototyping tools that can be used to simulate complex interactions.

The complexity of prototyping software

In the past prototyping software was used as an alternative to CSS and HTML and was used to show the structures of the different websites. In recent years these tools have become more complex and were able to demonstrate the interlinking of pages as well as on-screen interactive UI elements. Nowadays some tools, especially those targeted at the mobile specialists, include many more interactions. ...
... The drawback of this is that for some designers, these prototyping tools become very complex. Another important aspect is that interaction is one part of the user design process. Far more important is the content and user flows of an app or website. Once these have been mapped out, it is time to focus on other usability aspects such as interaction.

What interactions are there?

Many users interact with devices automatically. Some interactions are intuitive to the user, such as turning the page of a book on an iPad, or swiping to unlock a phone. Many interactions like these are taken from the interactions we use every day away from our devices. Users can deal with a variety of interactions and for each one the user experience designer must consider its relevance. It is commonplace, for example that apps with a higher level of security will also have more complex interactions to open the app. For each action that the user inputs the app must put out a reaction. This could be a button highlighting, a menu appearing, or a sound playing. It’s important that the user feels the feedback in some way, much like with physical objects.

Inputting interactions

Including interactions in a prototype is not easy. Due to the range of actions and reactions in many mainstream apps and websites, this adds many different options that interaction designers must add to each UI element. In the wireframing process, these interactions are not included. Once the wireframes have been finalized and a team moves onto more complex prototypes, the interaction designer has the choice of programming the interactions or using a prototyping tool. The benefit of prototyping software is that this is often much faster than coding and ux designers can try out their prototypes on end users. This means that issues to do with content, navigation and simple interactions can be fixed before the next iteration of the design process. The more complex the prototyping tool is, the more precise the interactions become. The most important thing in a project is that the level of detail is always for fitting for the stage in development.
