In recent years the Kansas City area has been a huge target for Storm Chasers. If you aren’t familiar with what a storm chaser is please allow me to enlighten you. A storm chaser by definition is an individual or group who travels from city to city following storms. They move in within hours of a storm hitting, spend a few hundred dollar on printing materials that will mislead a home owner in to thinking they are a reputable established company that has been servicing your area for years. Here are some tips on how to spot a storm chaser.

Check their ratings on the Better Business Bureau

Check Yellow pages

Companies that have been in the Kansas City area almost always have a listing.

Talk to your neighbor’s.

The roofing industry is a highly completive industry and generally the best way to find someone you can rely on is Word of Mouth.

Look for out of state tags on their Vehicle.

If it doesn’t say KS or MO say “No Way!”

Ask the estimator to show you their insurance.

Make sure they have General Liability and Worker’s Comp. Kansas ...
... and Missouri state laws require that all residential and commercial contractors with 5 or more employee carry both.

Beware! Anyone can provide a piece of paper that says “Insurance.” Request the contractor to have you added as a certificate holder. This will then secure that the insurance is valid when you receive a copy with your name and address directly from the insurance company. This can be done via mail or fax and is some cases via email.

Ask for lien waivers from both the company and the suppliers.

Think before you buy, selecting a contractor can be a difficult decision and the decision should not be made lightly.

The roof on your home is one of the biggest purchases you will make next to the actual home itself, and automobile.

Typically the average time of ownership on a vehicle is 3 – 5 years, your home will last you much longer. Take the time to do the proper research when selecting a contractor as typically your home is your biggest asset.
