Welcome back to our two-part article series on recognizing the signs and symptoms of gum disease. In our previous post, we discussed what gum disease – or periodontitis – is and the primary symptoms it presents with. In this article, the second installment, we shall focus on what preventative measures people can take to keep their teeth and gums in excellent lifelong condition and in doing so, save themselves the expense of dental implants in NJ.
Gum Disease Prevention
Gum disease is a serious oral ailment that is linked to a whole host of other crippling and potentially fatal illnesses, from rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and kidney disease to cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and osteoporosis. Although there are tens of millions of people who suffer from advanced gum disease, this condition is actually wholly preventable and treatable. All it requires is a dedication to maintaining a high standard of oral hygiene and regular scheduled appointments with the dentist.
Gum disease, which is an oral bacterial infection of the gums, is most frequently caused by one ...
... or more of the following:

A Neglect of Proper Oral Hygiene: Skipping brushes, not flossing, not going to the dentist for regular professional teeth cleanings.
Bad Eating Habits: An unhealthy and unbalanced diet that is high in sugar and carbohydrates.
Smoking and Tobacco-use: Smoking is one of the leading causes of periodontitis. It dries up the salivary glands and inflames the soft tissue in the mouth.
Substance Abuse: Alcohol is high in sugar and acid and causes “dry mouth”. Frequent heavy drinking therefore puts you at a greater risk of gum disease. The connection between tooth loss and drug abuse is also well documented.
Other Risk Factors: Certain illnesses and conditions, such as diabetes, can leave you at a higher risk of developing gum disease. Eating disorders, especially bulimia, are known to cause acid erosion of the teeth, which then succumb to decay and disease. Your genetic heritage can also be an indicator of your risk of developing gingivitis and periodontitis. Some people are naturally more susceptible to the disease than others. Pregnancy and times of hormone fluctuation (menopause) are also factors.

What You Should be Doing
Preventing gum disease, tooth loss and the eventual need for dental implants in New Jersey is actually incredibly easy and can be done by adhering to four over-arching principles:

Keep Your Teeth and Gums Clean: Brush regularly and thoroughly, floss everyday and use an anti-bacterial mouth rinse (optional).
See Your Dentist! Keep regular scheduled appointments with the dentist and oral hygienist; twice a year is recommended. These professionals will be able to identify early signs of infection and decay and treat them before they have the opportunity to do extensive and even irreparable damage.
Eat Healthily: Drink more water and less sugar and acid rich sodas, fruit juices and energy drinks. Eat a balanced, healthy diet and your teeth and gums will become strong and more resistant to infection and decay.
Don’t Abuse Your Body: Drug-abuse, smoking, the excessive consumption of alcohol and eating disorders all constitute a gross negligence of whole body health. If you don’t look after yourself, your health will deteriorate. If you suffer from any addictions or disorders, it is important that you seek the appropriate medical and/or psychological help you need to overcome your condition, or dental implants in NJ will be the least of all your concerns!
